4493838 Well this one guy did a very exaustive investigation of Ponyville using the same techniques emploied by nature photographers to find the numbers of herd animals within an area. Here it is

He comes to the conclusion that "Ponyville has between 3,100 and 4,300 citizens."

Based on these figures and the fact that Ponyville is called a small town in the show, as well as a rural town and "out of the way" we can assume their population numbers based on settlements is similar to America, as that range is about right for a small rural town in America. From here we simply examine official sources for what FiM places are towns, and which are cities, and give them an estimated population equal to the average city or town size for an equivalent American town/city. Note, I am counting Manehatten as a Metropolitan due to it's size on the map, number of buildings, and how important it is based off what it's seai d to be int he show (and it's a New York City stand in).

Bassed on the official map of Equestria (which shows the towns and cities by drawing mini versions of hosues or large buildings), and the US census data from 2014, we have:

-Total: 2,559,384 (based on average population of US's 10 largest cities. This is 30.14% the size of NYC.)

-Total: 2,142,462 ponies (based on 306,066 average population of all US cities with more than 100k residents)

That's not really a good number though because not all towns are on the map, Trottingham is mentioned in the show but not on the map. This means that like in reality towns below a certain size are probably left off the national map. Since Ponyville is between 3.1 and 4.2K ponies but on the map we can assume that 3k is the cut off point. Since 4.73 million is close in population numbers to Turkmenistan, let's assume that Equestria has a total number of settlements reasonably close to it. Why do this? Because economy, you cant sustain a nation on just 12 settlements.

That's 1,178 settlements, let's round it up to 1,180. So since we did the biggest settlements, we subtract them form this number to get 1,168. We based our population figures off America, so keeping to that standard, "Buford, Wyoming: Smallest Town In America. Boasting on the town limits sign its population of 1" The adverage of the range of 1 - 3,000 is 1,500, mathmaticly using the average works as a reasonable estimate even though that number per town will varry wildly.

So 1168*1500=1,752,000 giving us our last total for unmarked town population numbers at 1,752,000.

The estimated total population of Equestria is therefore: 6,486,517 ponies

Note: this makes Equestria roughly the same size as the Republic of El Salvador. If you need more country data, I would recommend using it as a basis as a nation's population is often the best limiting factors of it's economy, power, and the like.
