How to Homemade Apple Fritter Rings

This recipe is really easy to make. The prep time for the batter is just 5 minutes, and each batch of rings will cook for just 4 minutes, meaning your first batch is ready in under 10 minutes!

  1. Heat the oil until it reaches a temperature of 350 degrees F. TIP: If you don’t have a way to check the temperature of your oil a quick cheat is to use the handle of a wooden spoon. If bubbles form around the wood then the oil is hot enough to fry.
  2. Remove the apple cores and slice apples into ¼” slices.
TIP: Do not cut the apple slices too thick, or they won’t cook through enough.

  3. Whisk together ginger ale, flour, and salt.
  4. Dip each apple slice into the batter and drop into heated oil, turn over after 2 minutes.

Toppings

  • CARAMEL: These apple fritter rings are so delicious with caramel sauce – the store-bought type you use on ice cream works just fine.
  • ICE CREAM: It’s also delicious to serve these warm fritters with some cold and creamy vanilla ice cream!
  • WHIPPED CREAM: For a simple sweet and creamy complement to these, you can top them off with whipped cream! I especially love them with my homemade whipped cream recipe.

What Type Of Apple Is Best for Apple Fritter Rings?

Any type of apples will work in this recipe and be delicious! I have found that I like to use a sweeter apple over a tart apple. So, I tend to stick with Honeycrisp or Pink Ladies. But, you can totally use your favorite kind of apple!

Tips

  • If you don’t have an apple corer, you can slice the apples and use a spoon to carefully remove the core circle.
  • When you begin to fry your apple pieces, don’t add too many to the oil to be fried at one time, or they will start to stick together. I have found that with a typical countertop electric fryer you will only be able to add 3 apples at a time.
  • If you do not plan on eating the apple fritters right when they come out of the oil, you can pop them in the oven to keep them warm.

Can I Make Apple Fritter Rings In The Air Fryer?

While there are various recipes for Air Fryer Apple Fritter Rings, this is not one of them.

The batter used in this recipe is too runny and needs to be fried in hot oil. This technique also makes for the crispiest and most delicious fritter rings!

If you placed these in the air fryer the batter would run off the apples before setting. You need a thicker batter for the air fryer. However, these are delicious as leftovers reheated using the air fryer!

How to Store Apple Fritter Rings

While these are best when eaten fresh, they can also be stored and reheated if you have leftover.

There is no need to refrigerate your fritter rings. Simply store them on your countertop for 2 days.

Due to the texture of the fried apple fritter ring, they are best when reheated in an air fryer or hot oven. The microwave will make them very soft, almost soggy. I don’t recommend freezing this recipe.

  • 4 Apples
  • 1 can Ginger Ale
  • 1-½ Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tsp. Salt
  • ¼ Cup Powdered Sugar
  • 3 Tsp. Cinnamon
  • Oil for frying Only needs to be 1-2 inches deep

Instructions

  • Turn on the heat to your oil, to reach 350°F.

  • Using an apple corer, remove the core from the apples.

  • Slice the apples into ¼” Slices and set aside.

  • Pour the ginger ale into a medium sized mixing bowl and add the flour and salt. Mix together using a whisk.

  • Once your oil has reached temperature dip each apple ring into the batter that has formed and carefully drop into the hot oil. • Turn apple slices over after 2 minutes to cook the other side (the apple slices will be cooking on the top).

  • Take a small mixing bowl and add the powdered sugar and cinnamon. Mix together and dust the fried apple fritter rings.

  • Serve warm.

Jenn’s Notes

  • If you don’t have an apple corer you can slice the apples then use a spoon to carefully remove the core circle.
  • Don’t cut the apple slices too thick or the apple won’t cook through enough.
If you don’t have a way to check the temperature of your oil a quick cheat is to use the handle of a wooden spoon. If bubbles form around the wood then the oil is hot enough to fry.

Storage Instructions

No need to refrigerate. Store covered on your countertop for 2 days. Due to the texture of the fried apple fritter ring they are best reheated in an air fryer or a hot oven. Do not microwave.
I would not recommend freezing this recipe.

A fritter batter is a muffin batter without butter (fat). How does pancake batter fit in? Right in the middle of the two because it use 1/2 part fat, but keeps the other core components the same. These all fall under the quick bread family, which use baking powder or soda as a leavener.

What is the difference between a bear claw donut and an apple fritter? ›

There are actually quite a few differences between a bear claw and an apple fritter. Apple fritters have a very different taste and texture than a bear claw. They have a dough mixed with apples and cinnamon and then deep fried. Bear Claws have a very distinct shape and are usually oven baked.

Should fritter batter be thick? ›

You want a thick batter for these fritters. If you find it's a little too thin simply add in some more flour. If the batters too thick (can still see flour etc), add a dash of milk. The batter should be thick enough to hold its shape on a tablespoon without pouring off everywhere.

Why do you put baking powder in fritters? ›

They just need a simple, light batter of flour, cornstarch, and baking powder mixed with seltzer to tie them together. The seltzer and baking powder ensure that the fritters are shatteringly crisp–even slightly tired vegetables emerge from the oil crunchy, fresh, and sweet.

What does baking soda do in fritters? ›

Baking soda (bi-carb) OR baking powder – just a touch, to aerate the batter every so slightly (without it, it's slightly denser); Parmesan – for a good hit of savoury flavour AND to make the fritters extra crispy! Green onion and coriander – for a hit of freshness.

Does baking soda make fritters crispy? ›

Is baking soda or powder best for frying? A pinch of baking soda can help produce crispy fried foods. It reacts with the acid in the batter to create carbon dioxide bubbles. These lead to an airy batter and a crisper, fluffier result.

Why are apple fritters unhealthy? ›

Apple fritters are among the unhealthiest doughnuts. Just because a doughnut has fruit it it doesn't mean it is a good choice. Apple fritters are deep fried in fat. A medium sized apple fritter contains approximately 17 grams of fat (almost half the fat from saturated fat) and 450 calories.

How do you keep fritters crispy? ›

Keep the food warm in the oven.

If you're not serving fried food immediately, you'll need to keep it warm to prevent it from getting cold and losing crispiness. One way to do this is to place the fried food on a wire rack in the oven at a low temperature, around 200°F to 250°F.

High in THC and low in CBD, the Apple Fritter strain takes you on a fun journey.

What's the difference between pancakes and fritters? ›

I should note that the difference between a pancake and a fritter had never much occurred to me before writing this, perhaps because banana fritters blur the lines. Technically, a pancake is defined by batter; a fritter is defined by what's dipped into batter, whether vegetables or fruits or leftover meats.

Can you use pancake batter to fry things? ›

Pancake mix is simply a runny batter made from eggs, flour, and milk. This is the same basic batter that's used for deep frying, so you can simply add herbs and spices to leftover pancake mix to create the perfect coating for fried chicken, or recreate a pub-style fish and chips dinner by making battered cod!
