Clemson baseball earns walk-off win over High Point in NCAA Regional opener (2024)

CLEMSON, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Clemson baseball beat High Point 4-3 with a walk-off single from Tristan Bissetta in the bottom of the 9th inning that scored Blake Wright from second base.

FOX Carolina provided the live updates below during the entire matchup between No. 1 seed Clemson and No. 4 seed High Point’s NCAA Regional opener.

Boiling Springs native Tristan Smith takes the mound for the Tigers. He strikes out two batters as no High Point runners reach base.

Bottom

High Point’s Gus Hughes hits Clemon’s Alden Mathes and Blake Wright putting runners on first and second base. Cam Cannarella flys out and Jimmy Obertop grounds out so Clemson leaves two runners on base.

Tristan Smith strikes out all three High Point batters and is dominating on the mound. He has struck out five of the first six Panthers batters.

Clemson once again gets two runners on base but it didn’t amount to any runs. Jack Crighton reached base on an infield single and was caught stealing second. Jacob Jarrell hit a single to left center but was left stranded.

For the third straight inning, no High Point runners reached base. Clemson’s Smith struck out one more batter and has six out of a possible nine strike outs to start.

Clemson scores its first run of the game as Cannarella hits a single and Jacob Hinderleider scores from second base. Tigers take the lead 1-0.

High Point’s leadoff hitter Konni Durschlag is safe at first after an error by Smith while trying to touch first base. The umpires’ call to rule Durschlag safe is reviewed, the Clemson crowd voices its disapproval but the call stands.

Cael Chatham singles to deep right field and Durschlag scores on an error by Clemson’s Mathes. High Point ties up the game 1-1.

High Point scores another unearned run to take a 2-1 lead on Clemson. Charlie Klinger hits an infield single and Chatham scores.

The Tigers’ Tristan Bissetta hits a double down the right-field line. Jack Crighton singles to left field and advances Bissetta to third base.

Clemson ties the game 2-2 with Bissetta scoring on a Jarren Purify bunt. High Point’s pitcher Hughes records a throwing error as he tosses the ball over the catcher’s head on the play at the plate.

Tied at 2, Clemson’s Mathes and Purify nearly collide on a blooper to right field. Neither player catches the ball, neither gets hurt and High Point’s Brayden Simpson records a double.

Despite the scare, the Tigers escape without allowing a run. They’re still tied at 2.

Cannarella gets walked, but the Tigers get no hits and remain tied at 2.

High Point’s Peyton Carr singles to center field then advances to second on a wild pitch by Smith.

Adam Stuart follows that up with a single of his own to advance Carr to third and Carr scores on a Klinger RBI. High Point takes a 3-2 lead.

Down 3-2 to start the half inning, Clemson’s Crighton reaches first base on a throwing error by High Point third baseman Chatham.

The next batter, Jarrell doubles to left field and advances Crighton the third. Purify follows that up with a single to center and Crighton scores to tie the game at 3-3.

Clemson will play No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. Saturday in the winners side of the bracket.

High Point will play No. 2 seed Vanderbilt at noon Saturday in the elimination side of the bracket.

Both games will take place at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson.
