What Does BBCOR Mean for Metal Baseball Bats?
The acronym stands for Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution, a measurement of the trampoline effect of a bat’s barrel, as it relates to how fast and far a baseball will travel once hit.
The BBCOR measurement system was first mandated in 2012 as part of an initiative to protect players out on the field from balls hit super hard.
Most adult baseball bats used in high school and college play are required to have the BBCOR stamp of approval, which usually is found above the handle, or on the taper of the bat where the handle grows into the barrel.
Yet, not all bats come with the BBCOR stamp. For this article, we will consider bats that are specifically marketed BBCOR-allowed by the manufacturer.
Standards like BBCOR were established not just for safety, but to steer baseball away from Home Run Derby-like contests of long-ball slugging. Games under BBCOR rules have more emphasis on pitching, less on power hitting as the bats are designed to emulate the power of wooden bats.
Trampoline Effect and BBCOR Standards for School Baseball Play
Through the 1980s, metal baseball bat manufacturers kept tinkering with technological advances in their bats, to the point where they became dangerous to players with gloves out on the field.
The “trampoline effect” of a baseball off a bat’s barrel is just like it sounds: this phenomena shoots the ball faster than what a “natural” bat may do. Believe it or not, metals in bats upon that brutal contact with the ball give (or bend) quite a bit. Bat manufacturers figured out how to make that metal bounce back hard ~ and then some.
As baseball bat-makers began using exotic materials like titanium, and engaging measures like double-walled barrels, balls started coming off the bat faster than human fielders could react. (Maybe robot fielders could, but we’re not there yet). This resulted in very serious injuries, especially to pitchers, which drove the move to metal bat standards.
A BBCOR of .50 or less is a standard for non-wood bats, so designated to mean they “perform more like wood bats.” In essence, the bat cannot provide power above and beyond what the human holding it can deliver.
What to Look for in BBCOR Baseball Bats
Well, start with the bat itself, to look if you can see the BBCOR stamp. It should be accompanied by a number as high as .50, because this is the cap allowed for the trampoline effect. (You won’t find the acronym BBCOR with numbers .51 and higher, because they just don’t meet the standards).
While .50 is the maximum, you’ll find some bats that might be .49 or .48, and this is fine, also. The trampoline effect of a metal bat is but 1 element of many a player or parent should consider when making a new bat purchase. (But it’s a big element, by the way).
So, find BBCOR .50 (or less) stamped on the bat, or noted in its marketing materials for those who order online. After that, consider:
- Brand. Well-known bat-making brands like Rawlings, Easton, or Louisville Slugger have a history in this market that dates back to before these metal-bat standards were devised. They have a track record which means you will find plenty of sports news items and buyer testimonials to consider along with it.
(Not that there’s anything wrong with trying a model from a new brand. These new models could very well prove spectacular. But if you’re in the process of buying the best BBCOR bat you can find, then you’re not looking for the lowest price. These best bats can be pricey, so why chance the cost on an unproven newcomer?)

Negative Numbers on Metal Baseball Bats is Drop Weight
Drop weight, also known as bat drop, is a measurement sum, the difference between the weight of a baseball bat and the length of a bat. Bat drop weight is calculated by subtracting the length of the bat (measured in inches) from the weight of the bat (measured in ounces).
For instance, if a bat is 34 inches long and 31 ounces in weight, the drop weight is negative three (31 − 34 = −3). A bat of this size could be called a “drop 3” and is conveyed as a negative number, e.g. -3.
All BBCOR baseball bats have a drop weight of -3. That keeps the weight distribution as even as possible, leaving the power up to the person wielding it. Note: USA baseball bats do not have drop 3 weight-to-length ratio cap like the BBCOR bats.
USA Baseball bats are allowed to be lighter than BBCOR bats, by design since they are used by smaller and younger players.
You might run across some ridiculously big drop weight numbers on bats for younger and smaller children, like -13. Besides not being BBCOR-certified, these bats will be too small for school-age players anyway.
Please know that as of Jan. 1, 2018, USA Baseball passed a new rule that makes all USA bats made prior to 2018 illegal. So, don’t buy old bats with this stamp.
There is also an old bat standard known as BESR, for Ball Exit Speed Ratio, that used to apply to high school and college play. This standard measured the speed of the ball off the bat instead of the trampoline effect.
These bats are not approved for play almost everywhere nowadays. They were banned for use in college level and high school play in 2012. But you might still run across one in a used sporting goods store.
